Kathleen Kennedy is “Doubtful” Fans Will See ‘Rogue One’ Characters Again

The upcoming Star Wars spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will introduce a slew of new characters including a team of ragtag rebel spies first referenced in the opening crawl of the original Star Wars. Rogue One tells the story of these rebels as they embark on a dangerous mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, the galactic superweapon that will cement the Empire’s grip on the galaxy for good.

Being that none of the new characters introduced in Rogue One have ever appeared or been referenced in previous installments to the franchise, it’s highly unlikely these new characters will make it out of the standalone film alive.

Today, during the press conference for Rogue One, President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy was asked what the chances were of seeing these new characters again either in a sequel to Rogue or in another Star Wars film:

“You know, when we came up with this idea to do the standalone movies, what’s liberating in many ways is the notion that we can come up with these stories inside the Star Wars universe that really have a beginning, middle and an end, and they stand truly on their own. And [Rogue One] does.”

When probed further about seeing the characters outside of Rogue, Kennedy simply responded by saying it was “doubtful”.

Industrial Light and Magic visual effects supervisor John Knoll, who came up with the idea for the story of Rogue One added:

“One way to think of the sequel to Rogue One is it’s Episode IV.”

Whether or not we see the characters again we already know they succeed in providing the Rebel Alliance with the plans to the Death Star. Rogue One will lead up to ten minutes before Princess Leia hides the plans inside R2-D2 while being pursued on board the Tantive IV by Darth Vader in his flagship Star Destroyer, the Devastator, at the beginning of the original Star Wars.

But if any of the characters in Rogue One have a chance of appearing in another Star Wars film, it’s K-2SO and it’s not just because he’s a droid. The hilarious Imperial security droid reprogrammed to fight for the Rebel Alliance played by Alan Tudyk has already risen to an iconic status prior to the film’s release. Judging from the reactions by the critics who were lucky enough to have seen the beginning of the film, K-2SO seems like he is in the biggest position to become to fan favorite of Rogue One.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16th.

Produced by Lucasfilm, the film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelson, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. Directed by Gareth Edwards.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves. In theaters December 2016.
