Garreth Edwards is currently in France making the rounds on his press tour for the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Since confirmation from President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy doesn’t seem to be enough, the director reiterated Kennedy’s confirmation that the film would not feature the Star Wars signature opening crawl when asked about the film’s opening:

“There is no opening crawl. But there is a prologue at the beginning of the film that takes place 15 years before the action of the film and that is how the action is exposed. Our film comes from the text of Episode IV if we give the text, it would be endless. We really had to differentiate Rogue One from the rest of the saga.”

The absence of Jedi has been a major talking point for Rogue One. But no Jedi doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see a lightsaber used in the film considering Darth Vader will be overseeing Krennic and the completion of the Death Star. When asked about the possibility of seeing a lightsaber, Edwards simply responded with “Darth Vader has one”. Based on his comment which feels like an intentional tease planted for the interview, it seems likely we will see Vader cut at least one character down with his red blade in Rogue One.

But that’s not all. Edwards was also asked if we would see Princess Leia and R2-D2 to which the director refused to comment, offering a polite “I cannot answer” response. As we already know, Rogue One will end just minutes before the beginning of the original classic Star Wars. Considering Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) had received the Death Star plans from her father, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), just before she hid them inside of R2-D2, there’s a good chance we’ll see the exchange between Leia and her father at the tail end of Rogue One. But I wouldn’t get your hopes up as far as actually seeing her face. In the beginning of Star Wars, George Lucas intentionally hid Princess Leia’s face until after she hid the Death Star plans. Personally, I would like to see Edwards respect that and carry the mystery of Leia’s face through up until the moment Lucas originally revealed it.
