Bryan Singer Reportedly Exits X-Men Franchise

It’s a troublesome time for 20th Century Fox with it’s X-Men franchise. The Gambit film has been in and out of development hell since the project lost it’s director Doug Liman. Recently, director Tim Miller up and split from Deadpool 2, and now The Hollywood Reporter claims director Bryan Singer has exited the X-Men franchise as well no doubt due to the poor reception of the incredibly contrived X-Men: Apocalypse most likely resulting in a change of course for the franchise.

The contracts for the franchise’s three young leads, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence are up as well. So it’s going to be even more costly to convince the actors and actress who have said they made a pact to not return unless all three of them were going to. At this point, the costly endeavor of renewing their contract doesn’t seem all that worth it especially after Lawrence’s lackluster performance in Apocalypse. The actress is obviously disinterested in the franchise and the make-up she is required to wear to play the character.

X-Men: Apocalypse was an exceptionally bad film. From the contrived nature of the plot to an uninteresting villain that studio expected us to accept just because he was there, the first and second act felt like a chore just to get us to the final action set piece of the film which made for an underwhelming showdown with an overload of visual effects. The only good bit in the film was the quick scene we got with Evan Peters reprising his role as Quicksilver.

While Bryan Singer had a very clear vision for the X-Men franchise early on, it strayed very much away from the style and tone of its source material. Given the upcoming Wolverine film Logan is set to be Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the clawed mutant hero, it might be best to cut loose from the current series of films and reboot the franchise with a new director rather than resetting the timeline like it did in Days of Future Past.
